SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Off to the best start since 2004, the Syracuse women's soccer team added to the win column on Friday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Army West Point (0-3-0) at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange improve to 2-0-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, junior Eva Gordon came into the game and tacked on a goal for the Orange. Maddie Iozzi sent the ball into the box on a corner kick, finding Sheridan Street. Street touched the ball into space to Taylor Bennett who found Gordon for the score. The goal was the only of the game, giving Gordon the game-winner – the first of her career.
"We went into the second half focusing on speed of play and I think we did an excellent job of executing that, and it was just a matter of putting into the back of the net," Gordon said.
Each team had eight shots in the game, with Syracuse getting three on goal and the Black Knights two on target. Army had five corner shots in the game, while the Orange had only two.
"Competing like we did today builds confidence," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "It wasn't a particularly attractive soccer game. The ball was in the air a lot, but the team fought hard. They hustled and they worked for each other."
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan picked up her second consecutive shutout win, marking the first time in her Syracuse career to secure back-to-back clean sheets. Brosnan has given up only one goal in the 2016 season, making her goals against average 0.31.
Bennett has stepped in and played a major role with the Orange in the first three games. The freshman leads the team in assists with two and has played in every minute of all three games.
The Orange are back at SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 28 to face Albany at 1:00 p.m. The Great Danes are currently 1-1-0 on the season, beating Army West Point in the opening weekend but falling to St. John's. The Great Danes are coming off its winningest season in school history with 11 wins in 2015. Albany was picked to win the America East in the preseason with six first-place votes. Syracuse and Albany faced off last season in the New York Challenge Cup hosted at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange staged a come-from-behind victory with a game-winning goal from Stephanie Skilton in the 84th minute.
