SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's ice hockey team (1-7-1, 0-0-0) host Penn State (2-6-4, 0-1-3) in the Orange's conference opener, Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Syracuse is 76-61-23 all-time in conference play and posted a 14-4-2 mark in CHA action last season.
LAST TIME OUTÂ
The Orange came out hot against No. 2 Boston College on Nov. 4, taking a 2-1 lead into the first intermission of the game. However, three second-period goals for the Eagles led Boston College to a 4-3 victory. Sophomores Kelli Rowswell and Savannah Rennie each tallied two points, Rowswell with a pair of assists and Rennie with a goal and an assist.
Freshman Kristen Siermachesky also tallied her first collegiate assist on the Rennie goal.
SERIES HISTORY
Syracuse and Penn State have met 22 times before in program history with the Orange holding the 18-1-3 advantage over the Nittany Lions. The two teams most recently met for a two-game set in February, a series that the Orange swept. Syracuse outscored Penn State 7-1 and Rennie notched three goals in two games. Four of the meetings between the schools have gone into overtime with Syracuse posting a 3-0-1 record in those four games.
SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS
The Lions sit at 2-6-4 on the season and are 0-1-3 in conference games this year. Penn State is hungry for its first conference victory as three of their four conference games have resulted in ties. Freshman Natalie Heising paces the Nittany Lions with seven points (three goals, four assists) on the season. Penn State is coming off a two-game series against Mercyhurst, dropping the first game but rallying to record a tie in game two.
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOK
Senior Stephanie Grossi is set to have a senior season for the record books as she continues to etch her name into program history. With her goal against Boston College, the Winnipeg native now has sole possession of fourth place on the all-time list for career goals. Grossi is also just one assist away from taking over the top spot in program history for career assists as the senior is currently tied with Melissa Piacentini with 59 career assists.
UP NEXT
The Orange travel to RIT on Nov. 17 before returning home to Tennity Ice Pavilion on Nov. 18 in a home-and-home series with the Tigers. Puck dropp is set for 6 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Admission to all home games at Tennity is free.
