WINTER PARK, Fla. – Redshirt freshman Mary Rahal scored her third goal of the day 40 seconds into overtime to give the No. 5/6 Syracuse a 17-16 victory against Harvard on Saturday, March 18 in Winter Park, Fla. The win snaps the Orange's two-game losing streak and improves their record to 8-2 this season.
Â
"Harvard is a good team and didn't give up," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "But our team was resilient and found a way to dig down deep when things weren't going our way and made plays when we needed it."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse led 10-6 at halftime and back-to-back goals by freshman Emily Hawryschuk and Alie Jimerson gave the Orange their largest lead of the game at 14-8 with 16:43 remaining. The Crimson (4-2) outscored Syracuse, 7-1, over a span of 14:41 to tie the game at 15-15 with 1:01 on the clock. Sophomore Nicole Levy gave the Orange the lead with an unassisted goal with 41 seconds left, but Harvard answered with Nicole Baiocco's goal with nine seconds on the clock to send the game to sudden-victory overtime.
Â
Freshman Morgan Widner (Coppell, Texas) won the draw to open the extra session. Following an Orange timeout, Widner passed the ball back into Syracuse's defensive zone to freshman goalkeeper Asa Goldstock (Niskayuna, N.Y.). Goldstock brought the ball up field and hit Rahal, who was going down the middle of the field, which led to a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie. Rahal buried her shot to give the Orange their third one-goal victory of the season.
Â
OF NOTE
Rahal tied her career high with three goals, as did Jimerson and sophomore Natalie Wallon (Waxhaw, N.C.). Wallon added an assist for a career-high four points to go along with three draw controls. Levy also recorded four points on three goals and an assist. She now leads the team in goals (19) and points (31) this season. Goldstock recorded a career-high 16 saves in the victory and recorded her first career assist.
