SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 6 seed Syracuse was upset by Boston College, 21-10, in the second round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, May 14. The Orange end the season with a 15-7 record.
Â
"We're a young team and we didn't step up to the playoff challenge against a team that is playing very well right now," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "Playing against a zone defense, they were finding people on the inside, didn't turn the ball over, didn't force it and they were tough to stop."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The teams were tied at 3-3 after the first 10 minutes of play before Kayla O'Connor scored to spark Boston College on a 6-1 scoring run that gave the Eagles a 9-4 lead with 9:57 on the clock. After a Syracuse timeout, redshirt junior Taylor Gait scored off a restart, but Boston College responded with back-to-back goals to take it largest lead of the half at 11-5. The teams traded goals before junior Riley Donahue scored on a pass from senior Devon Parker to cut the deficit to 12-7 at halftime.
Â
Boston College (15-7) tallied the first three goals of the second half to push its lead to 15-7. Sophomore Nicole Levy assisted on a goal by Parker and then scored an unassisted to goal to bring the Orange within six at 15-9, but that was as close as Syracuse would get. Boston College responded with five unanswered goals on its way to the 21-10 victory as the Orange had its string of five consecutive appearances at championship weekend snapped.
Â
OF NOTE
Parker led Syracuse with four points (2g, 2a), while Levy had two goals and an assist. Junior Alie Jimerson added two goals, and Donahue finished with two points, giving her a team-best 68 points this season.
