Syracuse University's 17th-ranked field hockey team will face No. 3 Duke (14-4) in the first round of the ACC Tournament this Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Orange are the No. 7 seed and Duke earned the No. 2 seed.
Â
'Cuse (8-7) holds a 5-1 winning record against Duke since the two teams began competition in
2013. Earlier this season, the Blue Devils handed the Orange their first loss in series history with
a 1-0 win at J.S. Coyne Stadium on Sept. 14. Goalkeeper Borg van der Velde recorded a
career-high 11 saves amidst the loss for the Orange.
Â
Syracuse will make its sixth ACC Tournament appearance and first as the No. 7 seed after posting a 1-5 record in conference play during the regular season.
Â
Last year, Louisville ousted Syracuse in the quarterfinals, with a goal in the last two minutes of regulation to advance with a 3-2 win.
Â
Syracuse has rarely let seeding affect its ACC Tournament outcome. In 2014, the Orange made it to the ACC Championship Game with an initial sixth-seed placement.
Â
The Blue Devils are fresh off a win over Ohio last week. Seeded No. 2 in the tournament, Duke has a 5-1 record over ACC Competition, with its only loss to No. 1 North Carolina. In the 2017 tournament, Louisville also ended Duke's ACC Championship aspirations when the Cardinals advanced after winning a shootout during the semifinals. The Blue Devils have a 17-35 all-time record in the ACC Tournament since joining the league in 1953 and have reached the semifinals in each of the last two seasons.
Â
Fans can watch Thursday's quarterfinal game on ACCN Extra at 1:30 p.m.
Â
Tickets for the ACC Tournament Pass (all games) are $10 and single game tickets are $5. Youth tickets (18 and under) are free. All tickets can be purchased on game day at the Stadium. Â
