Strong Second Half Leads #5 Tar Heels Past #15 Orange
4/14/2018 3:38:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 5/5 North Carolina used a 7-2 scoring run early in the second half to pull away from No. 15/16 Syracuse and recorded a 20-11 victory in women's lacrosse action at the Carrier Dome on Saturday, April 14.
"Today was tough - I thought we had time to prepare (for this game) and I thought we just came out flat," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "Maybe it's just been a long season, a long grind, but we didn't deliver our best game, best performance today. We have work to do – a couple of games left in the season, ACC (Tournament). We have to flip a switch and find a way to get some energy and get a couple of W's here at the end of the year."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
North Carolina (10-3, 5-1) led 8-5 at halftime, but sophomore Emily Hawryschuk scored an unassisted goal to start the second half to cut the deficit to two. Kara Klages scored one of her five goals to spark the Tar Heels on a 7-2 scoring run that pushed their lead to 15-8 with 20:13 on the clock.
Freshman Molly Carter converted on a free-position attempt to briefly halt North Carolina's offensive outburst, but back-to-back goals by Marie McCool and Jamie Ortega gave the Tar Heels a 17-9 advantage.
Hawryschuk tallied an unassisted goal at the 7:39 mark to bring the Orange (8-7, 0-5) within seven, but that was as close as Syracuse could get. North Carolina recorded three more goals and posted the 20-11 victory.
OF NOTE
Hawryschuk scored four goals for the Orange. She now has 13 goals in her last three games and leads the team with 44. She also has a team-best 52 points. Senior Riley Donahue also had four points against the Tar Heels on two goals and two assists. Donahue now has 140 career goals, which put her in a tie for eighth place on Syracuse's all-time leader list.
