SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder/forward Kate Hostage scored off a penalty kick in the 27th minute, and redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris recorded her first shutout of the year to lead the Syracuse women's soccer team to a 1-0 win against St. John's Thursday night at SU Soccer Stadium.
The Orange earned their first home win of the season and improved to 2-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 ACC.
"I'm very proud of the team," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "It was a very professional performance. I thought we were really good defensively, limiting [St. John's] to some long-range opportunities. The defense did a really good job of blocking shots and disrupting their play. I'm quite happy with the performance."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse scored the eventual game-winning goal midway through the first half, as Hostage was brought down in the box to set up a penalty kick at the 27-minute mark. The Southborough, Mass. native buried the shot in the top right corner of the goal, out of the reach of St. John's goalkeeper, to give the Orange a 1-0 lead.
On the other side of the field, Harris did her part to seal the win. The Syracuse goalkeeper stifled St. John's offense throughout the night, tallying six saves in the shutout and preventing St. John's offense from converting numerous attack opportunities.
OF NOTE
Hostage's goal is her second of the season and the third of her career. She notched her first goal of the year just one game ago, scoring the game-winning header against UConn.
Hostage, who first checked into the game as substitute in the 24th minute, finished the match with a team-high two shots. Sophomore midfielder/forward Mackenzie Vlachos and redshirt freshman defender/midfielder Laurel Ness each had one shot.
Harris, the transfer from Arkansas, notched her first clean sheet as a member of the Orange with a season-high six saves. The shutout is the ninth of her career.
Harris is the first Syracuse goalkeeper to record a shutout in a win since Courtney Brosnan tallied two saves in 1-0 victory against Miami last season.
The Orange's two-match winning streak is their longest since the squad won back-to-back matches against Cornell and Fairfield last season. Syracuse beat Cornell, 3-0, before shutting out Fairfield, 3-0, in early September last year.
UP NEXT
The Orange are on the road for their next four matches, kicking off their travels with two contests in Massachusetts. Syracuse plays Harvard Thursday, Aug. 30 before squaring off against Northeastern Sunday, Sept. 2.
