
Gutsche Scores Game-Winner in Overtime

Stanford, Calif. – Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the 11th-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team stormed back with a pair of goals from Chiara Gutsche to win 2-1 and improve to 3-0 on the season. No. 15 Stanford drops its third-straight game to open the season and stands at 0-3.
Emma Alderton scored off a rebounded shot in the tenth minute to give Stanford an early lead, one in which the Cardinal would hold through the first half. Stanford led Syracuse 8-7 in shots in the first half but 'Cuse's Borg van der Velde stopped four of the Cardinal's shots.
Syracuse dominated the second half, outshooting Stanford 7-1. Gutsche evened things up in the 47th minute and was assisted by Laura Graziosi.
Stanford had the opportunity for a go-ahead goal on a penalty corner but the goal was called off, keeping the score even.
The two entered overtime for the third time in their programs' history even at 1-1.
Gutsche netted the game-winner in the 81st minute to send the Orange back home to the east coast on a high-note.
The Orange improve to 9-0 all-time against Stanford and is 6-0 under head coach Ange Bradley against the Cardinal.
'Cuse remains on the road to open Atlantic Coast Conference play on Friday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m., in Charlottesville, Va.
