ACC CHAMPS ONCE AGAIN!
11/1/2019 12:58:00 PM | Cross Country
Trailing at 4k and tied at 6k, the Syracuse men's cross country team used a gutsy performance over the final 2,000-meters to claim the program's sixth ACC title in its seven seasons in the conference.
The victory, the first for Brien Bell as a head coach, was earned by beating one of the deeper ACC fields in recent memory, as No. 28 Syracuse bested five teams ranked ahead of them in the USTFCCCA poll this week.
"Its 100-percent built into our DNA. It's what we do, it's how we train - Sweet Road, TCB, Tully - We try to put other teams into a position where they have to execute over the final 2k," Bell said of his team's performance over the final stretch of the race. "We know we're pretty tough and fortunately we've executed in the final 2k in six out of the last seven years."
Â
The Orange finished with 68 points as a team, five points ahead of No. 20 Notre Dame (73 points) for the conference crown. No. 26 Virginia Tech and No. 23 Virginia both scored 100 points, with Virginia Tech taking the tiebreaker for third.
Depth was the key for the Orange, with the top-six Syracuse finishers crossing the line within 14 seconds of one another and all six earning All-ACC honors.
Â
Nathan Henderson was the top 'Cuse finisher, crossing the line in 24:39.0, which was good for ninth. Joe Dragon (24:41.8) took 10th, followed by a pair of redshirt freshmen in Noah Beveridge (24:48.9) and Nathan Lawler (24:51.1) taking 15th and 16th. Kevin James (24:53.2) and Dominic Hockenbury (24:53.8) rounded out the Orange in the top-20 in 18th and 19th.
The women finished fifth, led by All-ACC finishers Amanda Vestri and Rachel Bonner. Vestri crossed the line in ninth, with a time of 21:03.6. Rachel Bonner improved two spots from a year ago, finishing 16th in 21:16.8 for her second All-ACC honor.
Jordan Jacob (21:38.7) took 28th, Kelsey Potts (22:05) crossed the line in 52nd and Madeleine Davison (22:08.7) finished 54th to round out the women's scoring.
Next, Syracuse will look to defend its men's title at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Buffalo in two weeks.
