Orange Extend Winning Streak Against Greyhounds

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 4/4 Syracuse dominated the first half and stifled hopes of a second-half comeback by No. 13/12 Loyola in its 15-11 win against the non-conference foe. Hat tricks from senior Nicole Levy, junior Emily Hawryschuk and freshman Megan Carney fueled the Orange's offensive attack. The trio combined for 10 goals and two assists in the victory.
"We started out very well again, led by our defense" said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "It was very exciting to see how well they played. They kept getting us the ball back every time it went down there. I'm proud of the defense. I thought our offense, in the first half, took good quality shots. In the second half, some our shots didn't fall. We were 3-for-12 in the second half. We need to work on that and we will."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse (5-1, 0-1) controlled all aspects of the game in the first half, going on a 7-0 run to start the game. The Orange spread the scoring around, with Levy, Mary Rahal, Meaghan Tyrrell, Hawryschuk, Sam Swart and Carney all contributing to the 'Cuse goal total.
Loyola struck back with its first goal with 13:25 to go in the half, but the Orange quickly responded with three more from Levy, Carney and Rahal extending the advantage to 10-1 with 8:58 remaining. Loyola (1-2) managed to string a 3-0 run together, but Syracuse would add two more before the whistle blew to make the score 12-4 heading into the locker room.
The Greyhounds used the break to regroup and came out of the gates firing in the second half. The teams would trade goals to start the half, pushing the score to 14-6 with 21:27 left, but Loyola got into a groove and scored four unanswered goals to cut the deficit to 14-8 with just under eight to go in the game.
Syracuse used a goal by Levy to respond and get back on the board. The goal was just extra insurance, however, as the Greyhounds only scored twice more before the final whistle blew. Loyola would never come closer than a four-goal deficit in the second half.
OF NOTE
Syracuse went a perfect 21-for-21 on the clear. It marked the first time the Orange have been perfect on clear attempts since April 29, 2016 when Syracuse went 7-for-7 in a 16-11 win against Boston College in the ACC Tournament.
Goalkeeper Asa Goldstock stopped eight shots on goal, bringing her career total up to 334. The junior currently ranks third on the all-time list.
Freshman Braelie Kempney had 10 draw controls, the most from an Orange individual since junior Morgan Widner had 10 against North Carolina on April 15, 2017.
UP NEXT
Syracuse closes out its seven-game homestand with an ACC matchup against No. 7/6 Virginia on Saturday, Mar. 2. Opening draw is at 4 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
