Five Orange Earn AHCA Scholar All-America Honors

GLOUCESTER,Mass.— Five Syracuse ice hockey student-athletes are 2018-19 American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American Scholars, the association announced on July 30. Brooke Avery, Amanda Bäckebo, Jessica DiGirolamo, Lindsay Eastwood and Allie Olnowich join almost 500 other Division I men and women in being recognized.

A three-time honoree, Bäckebo's name has appeared on the list every year since its original inception in 2017. Additionally, Avery has earned the honor for the second time in her career after making the inaugural list in 2017 as well.

The quintet of players racked up numerous academic awards during the 2018-19 season as they all earned spots on the College Hockey America (CHA) 2018-19 All-Academic Team. The group also collectively earned spots on both the fall 2018 and spring 2019 athletic director's honor roll for their success in the classroom.

The honor of being called an All-American Scholar is reserved for those athletes who atÂtained a 3.6 GPA and participated in 40 percent of their school's games.

Bäckebo, a forward from Gagnef, Sweden, appears on the list for the third time in her career. A communication and rhetorical studies major in the College of Visual and Performance Arts, she appeared in 37 games last season for the Orange, recording her first career goal while setting a new career high in blocks (4).

Avery, an alternate captain for the 'Cuse last year, tied for second on the team in points (22) and goals (10), including a team-leading three game-winning goals. The Concord, N.H. native recorded the game-winning goal in the Orange's 6-2 victory over Robert Morris in the CHA Tournament championship game and is majoring in public relations in the Newhouse School of Public Communications.

DiGirolamo, a defenseman, earned a spot on the CHA All-Tournament team and led all Orange defensemen in goals (7) while ranking second in points (18). She opened the 2018-19 season on a four-game point streak and capped off the year with two assists in the CHA tournament title game. The Mississauga, Ontario native is pursuing a degree in communications and rhetorical studies, with a minor in sports management.

Eastwood, a co-captain last season, led all Orange defensemen in goals (9), ranked third in points (14), and earned a spot on the CHA All-Tournament Team for her defensive efforts. The Kanata, Ontario native finished the season tied for the team lead in game-winning goals (3) and recorded her first career hat trick against Mercyhurst to send Syracuse to the CHA championship game. Eastwood is a communication and rhetorical studies major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Olnowich, a defenseman from Chatham, N.J., scored two goals and three assists last season through 38 games. She finished the year by scoring the game-opening goal against Robert Morris in the CHA Tournament championship game and is a sport management major in the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
