Syracuse ice hockey will host Penn State on Friday, Dec. 11th and Saturday, Dec. 12th at Tennity Ice Pavilion after playing a pair of College Hockey America (CHA) games at PSU last weekend that resulted in a 2-2 OT tie and a 2-1 PSU victory. Both games will be streamed live on Cuse.com. The Orange (1-3-1 overall, 1-1-1 CHA) roster features Victoria Klimek, the CHA Player of the Week Victoria Klimek and Rayla Clemons, the CHA Rookie of the Month. Syracuse leads the series, 26-3-7. Penn State, a team receiving votes in the USCHO national rankings, enters the game with a 3-0-1 record.
Â
CHA Player of the Week
Senior Victoria Klimek earned the College Hockey America Player of the Week after scoring all three goals for the Orange at Penn State. The Orangeville, Ontario native scored the lone goal in Syracuse's 2-1 loss on Saturday and both goals in the 2-2 overtime tie on Sunday. Klimek started the scoring in both games, scoring eight minutes into the first game and tallying a pair of goals within six minutes of each other in the first period to give the Orange a 2-0 lead in the second game. Klimek, who has scored at least two goals in a game three times in her career, is the first Syracuse player to score in back-to-back games since Jessica DiGirolamo did that in 2018. In 2020-21, Klimek leads the team with six points, including four goals and two assists.
Â
CHA Rookie of the Month
Freshman Rayla Clemons was named College Hockey America Rookie of the Month after scoring at least one point in every game in November, including two goals in her collegiate debut against Colgate. The Franklin, Mich. native became the just the second player in Syracuse history to accomplish the feat of scoring twice in a first career game for the Orange. The last freshman to score a pair of goals in her debut was Janelle Malcolm in 2008-09. Clemons tallied the assist on Syracuse's lone goal in the game at Colgate the next day. In the third game of the season against RIT, she had an assist on freshman Sarah Thompson's goal in Syracuse's 7-1 victory.
Â
Getting Everyone Involved in the Offense
Through five games this season 14 players have scored at least one point. Senior Victoria Klimek leads the Orange with six points, including a team-best four goals, and two assists. Junior Lauren Bellefontaine is the team-leader in assists with three, and she also has one goal, for four points. Klimek has three two-goal games in her career, including at Penn State on Dec. 6. Senior Emma Polaski leads the current roster with three games of two goals or more and five games with three points or more.
Â
Small Stands Tall in Goal
Senior Allison Small's 44 saves against Penn State on Dec. 6 is the second-best save total in NCAA women's hockey in 2020-21 and ties for ninth on Syracuse's single-game record list. Only St. Cloud State's Emma Polusny's 50 saves is better than Small's performance this season. She is second in Syracuse history in save percentage with a .917 mark. Kallie Billadeau holds the record with a .918 mark from 2010 to 2014. Small has recorded 25 or more saves in 18 of her 29 career games, and 30 or more saves in 11 of those contests.
