CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Syracuse's varsity eight finished eighth overall and the varsity four placed fifth overall at the 2021 Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday in the first competition for the Orange this season.
"All-in-all it was a good race day for us," said head coach Luke McGee. "It was great to be back in Boston after the regatta was not held last year due to COVID. The excitement of the regatta, having the crowds along the course and on the bridges, and to have parents of our athletes there for support made it a really positive experience. The environment at the Head of the Charles is unlike any other in our sport in this country. It is really great for the athletes."
The varsity eight finished seventh among college boats, finishing the 4,700-meter course in 16:16.535. Junior Hannah Murphy was the coxswain that featured stroke Zoe Acosta, seven-seat Kamile Kralikaite, six-seat Heather Stafford, fifth-seat Emmie Frederico, fourth-seat Luisa Gathman, third-seat Alena Criss, second-seat Emma Gossman and bow Aphrodite Gioulekas.
"It was a good performance for the eight for their first time down the course together, including three rowers who were competing in their first race for Syracuse," McGee said. "The varsity eight has a great excitement and youthful energy about them. They have a ton of potential as they continue to learn how to row and race with each other."
The varsity four placed third among college boats, completing the 4,700-meter course in 18:42.110, behind Brown (18:15.731) and Boston University (18:32.591). Junior Louise Rath coxswained the boat that included stroke Kate Ryan, three-seat Emma Braun, second seat India Aikens and bow Grace Loveridge.
"The four did a good job, especially with the late changes due to illness," McGee said. "The rowers in the boat did a really professional job of keeping their head and executing a good race."
