Syracuse University junior forward Abby Moloughney earned her 60th career point in a 5-2 loss to Mercyhurst on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Sophomore forward Madison Beishuizen found Moloughney through a pair of defenders and Moloughney buried the puck behind Mercyhurst goaltender Ena Nystrom. Junior defender Shelby Calof also earned an assist. The Orange (3-7-1 overall, 3-5-1 College Hockey America) return to the ice tomorrow to complete the home series against Mercyhurst at 3 pm. The game will be streamed live on Cuse.com.
Â
"I thought we had a lot of good chances. That's what it boils down to," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "Their goaltender outplayed ours. I told (goalie) Allison (Small) to get her head up, to put it behind her and get ready for tomorrow. She is a competitor. I have confidence she will bounce back tomorrow. She will be right back out there as our starter. Allison has played pretty well for us this season. Tomorrow is another day. We have to replicate a lot of things we did and figure out a way to solve their goaltender. She played well tonight."
Â
Mercyhurst scored one goal in each of the first two periods and then added three more in the third before Moloughney tallied a goal for the Orange six minutes into the third period. Sophomore forward Brynn Koocher made the score 5-2 with less than two minutes to play, notching her first goal of the season with a shot to the top right of the goal on a rebound from senior forward Emma Polaski's shot. Polaski and sophomore defender Mae Batherson earned the assists.
Â
Moloughney leads the team in scoring with 10 points, including five goals and five assists. Her 60 career points include 25 goals and 35 assists.
Â
The Orange successfully killed three Mercyhurst power play opportunities, including a 3-on-5 kill in the first period. The Orange are ranked second in the nation in penalty kills, turning away more than 94 percent of opponents' power plays.
Â
Freshmen goaltender Amelia Van Vliet played her first collegiate career minutes, recording 10 saves in 17 minutes played in the third period.
