Syracuse opened the 2021 College Hockey America Tournament with a 6-0 win over Lindenwood on Thursday in the quarterfinal matchup at Erie Ice Arena. Nine Orange players recorded a point, including a 4-point performance from senior defender Jessica DiGirolamo. She is now tied for most career points by a Syracuse defender (76). The Orange (11-8-1 overall, 8-6-1 CHA) will play top-seed Penn State in the semifinals on Friday at 2 pm (StretchTV).
Â
"We are excited to be moving on to the semifinals," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "It helped us to get on the board first tonight. Having just played Lindenwood three times last month we knew they had a lot of energy and they were not going to stop. Kudos to them, they played to the final whistle. For tomorrow against Penn State, there are things that we know we have to bear down on because they are a really good team."
Â
Forward Victoria Klimek scored the first goal by redirecting a shot from senior Kristen Siermachesky five minutes into the first period. Four minutes later DiGirolamo netted the second goal off a give-and-go play with Klimek. The goal was DiGirolamo's 10th goal of the season, tying the Syracuse record for goals by a defender in a season.
Â
Junior Abby Moloughney made it 3-0 less than 30 seconds into the second period off an assist from defender Mae Batherson. Then freshman Rayla Clemons buried a goal six minutes later off of a DiGirolamo feed through three Lindenwood defenders. Batherson tallied the fifth 'Cuse goal with a powerful slapshot on assists from DiGirolamo and junior Lauren Bellefontaine.
Â
Sophomore Brynn Koocher tallied the final goal with a backhand shot just more than three minutes into the final period. DiGirolamo and sophomore Madison Beishuizen set up the play for Koocher.
Â
Syracuse goaltenders Allison Small and Amelia Van Vliet combined for 29 saves in the shutout victory.
