SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After trailing by three with under nine minutes remaining, No. 3/3 Syracuse (8-1, 5-1) orchestrated a 6-0 run to sink No. 7/6 Virginia (8-4, 3-4) by a score of 15-12 in the Carrier Dome on Saturday. The victory improves the Orange to 5-0 at home this season.
Meaghan Tyrrell tied her career high with a team-leading five goals and led the Orange with six points. Megan Carney followed closely behind with four goals and an assist. Sam Swart notched a hat trick for her third three-plus goal game of the season while Emma Ward dished out two of the Orange's four assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cavaliers came out hot in the first half, tallying seven of the game's first 10 goals over a 24-minute stretch that featured a pair of goals apiece from Annie Dyson and Ashlyn McGovern. With 55 seconds remaining, Carney notched her first goal of the game and the final goal of the half to make the Virginia lead 7-4 at the break.
Swart started the scoring in the second, but the 'Hoos answered back with a pair of tallies to extend their lead to four. However, Meghan Tyrrell followed a Carney goal with two of her own to cut the deficit to one, 9-8, with 16:16 remaining.
Over the ensuing eight minutes, Virginia (8-4, 3-4) outscored Syracuse 2-1, pushing its lead to 11-9 with 8:29 left in the game. Needing a comeback, the Orange offense erupted for six straight goals, three of which were scored or assisted by Meaghan Tyrrell, to take a commanding 15-11 lead with 3:14 remaining. Maggie Bostain scored the final goal of the game for the Cavaliers, but it was too little, too late as the Orange (8-1, 5-1) held on to win 15-12.
