CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After winning six of its last seven games to end the regular season, the No. 3/3 Syracuse women's lacrosse team's mission to capture a conference title begins against No. 24/19 Virginia Tech on Wednesday, April 28. Opening draw in Chapel Hill is scheduled for 5 p.m.

ORANGE UPDATE
Syracuse (12-2, 8-2 ACC) split a pair of matches with No. 4/4 Boston College to close conference play to claim the No. 2 seed in the tournament. In last Thursday's contest, a late woman-up goal from Jenn Medjid pushed the Eagles past the Orange, 14-13. Syracuse responded mightily on Saturday afternoon, when it won by a nine-goal margin, 16-7.

Saturday's strong showing was spearheaded by sophomore Emma Tyrrell, who had career highs in both points (7) and goals (6). Emma Ward added a hat trick while Meaghan Tyrrell and Sierra Cockerille each notched a pair of scores.

The 'Cuse ended the regular season campaign among the conference's best in a number of categories. Syracuse owned the best assists per game (8.93) and ground balls per game (17.43) averages in the ACC. Additionally, the Orange ranked second in the league in goals allowed per game (9.36), scoring margin (6.21), points per game (24.50), shots on goal per game (24.50), and caused turnovers per game (9.57).

SCOUTING THE HOKIES
After losing its first eight conference matches of the season, Virginia Tech secured its first ACC victory of the season against Virginia last Saturday, pushing its overall record to 5-10 on the year. The Hokies are the No. 7 seed in the ACC Tournament.

Senior attack Sarah Lubnow leads the Hokies in both points (49) and assists (26). Her assists per game (2.00) and points per game (3.77) averages rank fourth and seventh in the conference, respectively. Senior midfield Paige Petty has scored a team-best 41 goals, a mark that ranks fifth in the ACC and 28th in the nation.

Head coach John Sung is in his fifth season at the helm in Blacksburg. He led the program to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2019 and owns a 45-38 record during his time at Virginia Tech.

THE SERIES
Syracuse has won 10 of the 11 previous matchups against Virginia Tech. The teams met at the Carrier Dome this season on March 27, when the Orange scored nine-unanswered goals to erase a two-goal deficit and defeat the Hokies, 17-10. Megan Carney scored a team-best six goals while Meghan Tyrrell added four of her own.
