All Five Orange Boats Advance to ACC Championship Grand Finals
5/14/2021 1:28:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Five Syracuse boats will race in the grand finals at the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship on Saturday at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina. The 11th-ranked Orange will compete for the conference championship after every boat advanced to the grand finals by winning or placing second in their preliminary race on Friday. The petite and grand final races begin at 8:05 am and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra. The awards ceremony will begin at 10:30 am.
Â
"It was a good first day," said head coach Luke McGee. "The goal is to have a great team-wide performance. We are primed for a great team performance across all the boats. Everyone believes they are in a great spot to have their best race of the season, which is always what you want at a championship race."
Â
The varsity eight earned a spot in the grand final crossing the finish line less than one second behind Duke to take second place in the prelims. Duke finished in 6:35.016 to Syracuse's 6:35.974. The Orange fell behind early in the race and fought back to cross the finish line just behind the Blue Devils, and ahead of Miami and North Carolina. The Orange will compete against Virginia, Duke, Clemson, Notre Dame and Miami (9:55 a.m.).
Â
"The varsity eight raced a good Duke team and showed good determination and grit," McGee said. "When you get down, you can get flustered, but they showed a good maturity in staying internal and rowing their own race. You never want to be down by that amount that early because it is hard to come back from that. The fact that they did was a good sign for us. We will look to clean up some things to put ourselves in a good position for tomorrow."
Â
The second varsity eight won their heat to advance to the grand final finishing the race in 6:46.608, more than 10 seconds ahead of Clemson (6:57.226), Miami and Louisville. The Orange will race in the grand final against Virginia, Clemson, Duke, Miami and Notre Dame (9:30 a.m.).
Â
"The 2V were able to get away from the field in the first 1,000 and row a phenomenal race, so they are set up well for the final," McGee said.
Â
The third varsity eight advanced to the grand final with a second-place finish in the prelims. The Orange completed the race in 7:01.257, behind Duke (6:58.277), and ahead of Miami and North Carolina. The grand final will include Syracuse, Virginia, Duke, Clemson, Notre Dame and Miami (8:15 a.m.).
Â
"The 3V8 was great. They have only been able to row together six times before the regatta due to injury and illness and they had a good hard-fought race to finish within a length of the Duke boat," McGee said.
Â
First varsity four advanced to the grand final winning the prelim in 7:33.24, ahead of Clemson (7:38.899), Louisville and North Carolina. Syracuse will race Virginia, Clemson, Duke, Louisville, and Notre Dame in the grand final (9:05 a.m.)
Â
Second varsity four won its prelim in 7:32.654, beating Duke (7:39.554), North Carolina and Louisville. The Orange will compete in the grand final against Virginia, Notre Dame, Duke, Clemson and North Carolina (8:40 a.m.)
Â
"The fours were awesome," McGee said. "They are rolling and doing a great job."
Â
Three ACC teams are ranked in the top 20, including third-ranked Virginia and 17th-ranked Duke, while Notre Dame, Clemson and Louisville all received votes in the national poll.
Â
Syracuse has finished second at the conference championship two times, including 2017 and 2018. The Orange were third in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2019.
Â
A one-hour championship recap show will air on ACC Network on Sunday, May 23 at 7 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fans will not be permitted to attend the championship. To learn more about the ACC Network, visit GetACCN.com.
