Orange Standout on First Day of Lake Wheeler Invitational
4/22/2022 8:01:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The 15th-ranked Syracuse women's rowing team won five out of 10 races at the Lake Wheeler Invitational on Friday, April 22 in Raleigh, N.C.
Â
The 'Cuse varsity eight beat #11 Duke in the first round of racing and came in second to #9 Penn, losing by 0.18 seconds, in the second round. The Orange second varsity eight won both of its races, beating #11 Duke by five seconds in round one and defeating #9 Penn by 0.58 seconds in the second round. During the first round of racing in the early afternoon Syracuse competed against #11 Duke, Boston University, Georgetown and Kansas, and faced #9 Penn, Bucknell, Clemson, Navy and UCF in the second round in the late afternoon.
Â
"Across the board every boat had races they should be proud of today. The team had a really impressive performance," said head coach Luke McGee. "It was a great day of racing and showed why we came to this regatta – to race top 10 teams and learn more about ourselves. Our approach for tomorrow will be to find areas we can be a little sharper and a little faster to keep building for the rest of the season.
Â
"The varsity eight rowed a really solid race against Duke in the morning and then came back with another solid race against Penn but showed that we have some things to work on before we face them (Penn) again in eight days. The second varsity eight's win against Duke should give us some confidence for tomorrow and the rest of the season and it was a really important step to stay ahead of Penn in the second race. We have to remain humble and find a way to be even better next time."
Â
Syracuse's varsity four finished second in both races, 4.24 seconds behind #11 Duke in round one and just 2.08 seconds behind #9 Penn in round two. The Orange second varsity four finished first in both races, while the third varsity eight took third in round one and fourth in round two.
Â
"In the varsity four you can see the improvement since the Doc Hosea Invitational going bow ball to bow ball against Duke and Penn all the way down the course," McGee said. "The second varsity four set the tone with their morning race. You could see how their race built the momentum for the morning. The third varsity eight had two hard races but we know they have a few more cards to play over the rest of the season. I am confident that they will pick up speed as the season continues."
Â
Saturday morning the Orange will race Kansas, Louisville, North Carolina and UCF.
Â
The 16-team Lake Wheeler Invitational field includes #9 Penn, #11 Duke, Boston College, Boston University, Bucknell, Clemson, Georgetown, Kansas, Louisville, Miami, Navy, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Temple and UCF. Navy, UCF, Clemson, Louisville and Boston University are all receiving votes in this week's national rankings.
Â
The Lake Wheeler Invitational is in its third year. Duke won the 2019 and 2021 Pocock Cups as the regatta champion in those two years (the regatta was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19). The regatta is held in Lake Wheeler Park (6404 Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh, N.C.) and parking is $20 per vehicle.

50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
