Orange Win Pocock Cup
4/23/2022 2:10:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The 15th-ranked Orange are the 2022 Lake Wheeler Invitational champions. Syracuse won the Pocock Cup, based on team scoring, at the 16-team regatta. The Orange scored 83 points, beating 11th-ranked Duke (82 points), ninth-ranked Penn (third), and five other teams receiving votes in the national rankings, in Navy, UCF, Clemson, Louisville and Boston University.
Â
"We had a great team performance," said head coach Luke McGee. "One philosophy we are trying to drive home is that every person, every seat and every boat matters because it is all about the team. This was a challenging regatta to race back-to-back-to-back against strong competition. What stands out is the consistency of performances across the board. That was really key. As each boat came down the course you could feel the energy and it fueled the entire team."
Â
Syracuse won four of five races on Saturday morning to give the Orange a total of nine wins in 15 races at the regatta. Syracuse's second varsity eight and second varsity four swept the field, winning all three races during the event.
Â
The varsity eight beat Louisville, UCF, North Carolina and Kansas, while the second varsity eight finished first ahead of Louisville, UCF, Kansas and North Carolina. The varsity four dominated its race, finishing 11.6 seconds ahead of second-place Kansas. Louisville, UCF and North Carolina finished third through fifth. Syracuse's second varsity four beat UCF, Penn's 3V4, North Carolina and Kansas. The third varsity eight finished fourth in a tight race, separated by 4.1 seconds from first place UCF (7:19.50).
Â
The 16-team field at the Lake Wheeler Invitational, which was hosted by Duke and North Carolina at Lake Wheeler Park, also included Boston College, Bucknell, Georgetown, Kansas, Miami, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Temple.Â

50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
