Varsity Four Wins NCAA Semifinal Race
5/28/2022 2:15:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The Orange varsity four won its semifinal race at the 2022 NCAA Championships on Saturday, May 28 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. Syracuse covered the course in 7:27.609 to beat Oregon State, Gonzaga, Rhode Island and Boston University. The varsity eight and second varsity eight both finished second in their semifinals. All three Syracuse boats will race in the C finals on Sunday beginning with the varsity four at 8:22 am.
Â
"The four was definitely the bright spot of the day, they rowed a really good race and looked super composed, and the eights raced hard," said head coach Luke McGee. "We had some last second changes due to injury so that was unfortunate, we had to shuffle some lineups around. I thought the people who went in there did a good job adapting. Tomorrow every race is going to be fast. It's the quality of the competition, the depth of the championships, every final, regardless of which one you are in, you are matched up well. It will be really hard racing from the first stroke to the last."
Â
The varsity eight, with junior India Aikens replacing the injured Alena Criss, battled Oregon State, crossing the finish line less than one second behind the Beavers. The Orange beat Gonzaga, Boston University and Northeastern to earn their spot in the C final. Syracuse's second varsity eight, which had junior Madison D'Ambra in Aikens seat, also finished second covering the course in 6:45.154. Duke beat the field, while Boston University, Northeastern and Jacksonville came in third through fifth, respectively. Freshman Kaitlyn Dennis rowed in the varsity four in place of D'Ambra.
The 13th-ranked Orange, one of three Atlantic Coast Conference squads in the 22-team field, entered the 2022 event with the varsity eight seeded 14th, the second varsity eight seeded 12th and the varsity four seeded 16th.
Syracuse has competed in nine NCAA Championships, including 2021 when the Orange recorded the best team finish in program history with a 10th place performance. The Orange have competed in four of the last five NCAA Championships (2016, 2017, 2018, 2021; no championship in 2020 due to COVID-19).
Â
The NCAA Championship finals, which will be streamed live on NCAA.com, begin at 8:12 am on Sunday, May 29th. The Awards Ceremony begins at 11 am.

50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
