Goaltender coach Mike Murphy will continue his role with the Syracuse University ice hockey program, head coach Britni Smith announced today. The former professional goaltender and coaching veteran has worked with Orange goalies since 2019-20 in the role of a volunteer coach.
Â
"I am excited to be back with the Orange for the upcoming season to work with the three talented goalies and the entire Syracuse program," Murphy said.
Â
In his role with the Orange, Murphy has worked with 2021-22 CHA Goaltender of the Year and 2022 Battle at the Burgh MVP Arielle DeSmet and 2019-20 CHA Goaltending Champion Allison Small.
Â
"We are thrilled to have Mike continuing as the program's goalie coach. His extensive playing career and coaching experience with junior and collegiate goaltenders is an invaluable asset," said head coach Britni Smith. "Mike prides himself on his delivery of detailed video analysis and identifying small adjustments in a goalie's game that lead to big results. The extensive knowledge he acquired from his NHL & AHL goalie coaches, as well as his dedication to his athletes, has resulted in Mike having an impressive and proven track record."
Â
A former National Hockey League (NHL) goaltender, Murphy was a 2008 Carolina Hurricanes draft pick. He also played professionally in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Canadian Hockey League (CHL). He earned Goaltender of the Year honors in back-to-back years in the OHL and one time in the CHL.
Â
A native of Kingston, Ontario, Murphy owns and operates Mike Murphy Goaltending and also works with multiple championship Canadian hockey teams and organizations.
