Orange Lose to Merrimack
10/7/2023 9:40:00 PM | Ice Hockey
Syracuse lost to Merrimack in the second game of the series, 4-0, at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Warriors scored one goal midway through the first period and then tallied another at the midpoint of the second period for a 2-0 advantage after 40 minutes. In the last two minutes of the third period, Merrimack added two empty net goals for the final score. The Orange (2-2 overall) cut Merrimack's shot total to 32 on Saturday after the Warriors had 58 shots on goal on Friday.
Â
"Looking at yesterday to today, there were huge improvements," said head coach Britni Smith. "That is what we are about at this time of year is making sure every day we are better. Yes, we were outshot again tonight, but I think that there were some serious improvements in our game."
Â
The Syracuse penalty kill held Merrimack (3-2) off of the scoreboard throughout the weekend, including three times on Friday and once on Saturday.
Â
"Our penalty kill last weekend struggled," Smith said. "This weekend we did a fantastic job. We did not allow a power play goal against, and we also used it to our advantage with momentum shift. Our penalty kill gave us life multiple times. On the power play side, yesterday our power play was what got us back in the game and today we had opportunities on our power play that really would have shifted the game. Special teams showed a huge improvement."
Â
Orange goaltender Allie Kelley recorded 28 saves, giving her a series total of 84. The graduate student posted 56 saves in the first game of the series, which ranks second on Syracuse's single-game record list.
Â
The Orange will play a home-and-home series against RPI next weekend with the first game on Friday, Oct. 13 at 6 pm at RPI's Houston Field House and the second game on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 4 pm at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
