History in the Making: The Orange at Henley
6/26/2023 5:16:00 AM | Women's Rowing
For the first time in program history, Syracuse women's rowing will compete at the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames. The world-famous regatta – considered the most prestigious event in the sport – features more than 300 races in six days showcasing talented athletes from all over the world. The 2023 Henley Royal Regatta begins on Tuesday, June 27 and concludes on Sunday, July 2.
"Henley is a bucket list race for any rower or coxswain," said head coach Luke McGee, who has raced at Henley several times himself. "The event itself has been going on since 1839, it's unlike any other race in the world. As it goes on and the boat yard fills up and the racecourse gets more and more full the energy builds. Going down the course you see high school eights to Olympic champions – the whole spectrum -- which is really neat."
The Orange four, including stroke Izabela Krakic, Emmie Frederico, Annika Maxson and bow Alena Criss, will compete in the Town Challenge Cup (4-). Syracuse's eight, which features coxswain Hannah Murphy, stroke Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, Aphrodite Gioulekas, India Aikens, Olivia Schaertl, Lena Radke, Zoe Acosta, Haley Uliasz and bow Heather Stafford, will race in the Island Challenge Cup (8+). Seniors Madison D'Ambra and Junior Ognovich are the Syracuse spares.
The Orange eight races on Wednesday, June 28 against Oxford Brookes University 'C'. The winner of that race will face the University of Texas. The Island Challenge Cup field features 24 crews, including nine collegiate crews from the United States (Syracuse, Stanford, Texas, Penn, Radcliffe, Northeastern, Princeton and Georgetown.
The 'Cuse four will race on Friday, June 30 in the Town Challenge Cup against the winner of the race between the University of London & Leander Club and Strathclyde Park R.C. & Aberdeen Schools R.A. Stanford and Northeastern are the other U.S. programs in the Town Challenge Cup.
"We'll gain international exposure by flying our flag at Henley" McGee said. "It will help raise the profile our program for recruiting, student-athlete networking and alumni.
"Our opportunity is due to the commitment and generosity from so many people close to our program. We are grateful to the women, families, alumni and the friends of Syracuse women's rowing who helped to provide this experience for the current group of student athletes. It's a huge thank you to everyone who got behind this effort to help with the first trip to Henley for our program."
