Orange Race in Boston
9/29/2023 9:46:00 PM | Cross Country
The Syracuse cross country teams raced at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday, with the men taking ninth and the women took 12th. The meet was a good opportunity for the Orange to build depth, as the team ran a different roster than last week's event in Virginia that saw both squads shoot up the national rankings.
Silas Derfel was the top finisher on the men's side. He crossed the line in 24:41.4, which earned him 27th on the 8k course. Nathan Lawler (24:51.6) was just seven spots back. Julian Franjieh (53rd/25:15.1), Gabriel Planty (75th/25:42.4) and Noah Beveridge (87th/25:533.6) were the men's scorers.
Joey Hendershot (26:15.5) and Patrick Malone (26:26.9) also raced. The men's team finished with 249 points. Harvard came away with the win in 47 points.
Caroline Kirby was the top women's finisher, taking 52nd overall in a time of 18:13.6. Bethany Steiner (76th/18:31.4), Leah Futey (86th/18:41.1), Tess Fitzmaurice (89th/18:43.9) and Emily Toth-Ratazzi (96th/18:53.4) rounded out the Orange's scoring. Olivia Shattuck (19:36.9) and Taylor Mascetta (19:50.7) completed the 'Cuse field.
Harvard also won the women's race with 61 points.
'Cuse will next race at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 13.
