
Orange Men Take Third at Nuttycombe Invite

The Syracuse cross country teams raced at a pair of meets on Friday – including the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational that featured the majority of the nation's top-ranked teams. A strong day for the men's program solidified their top-10 ranking, bettering four other programs ranked inside the top-10.
The sixth-ranked men's team finished third at the Nuttycombe Invitational, behind top-ranked Northern Arizona and third-ranked BYU, and ahead of other top-10 teams including No. 4 Wisconsin No. 5 North Carolina, No. 7 Villanova and No. 9 Notre Dame.
Perry Mackinnon and Paul O'Donnell took 19th and 20th to lead the effort, finishing the 8K race in 23:46.1 and 23:48.9, respectively. Sam Lawler crossed the finish line 34th (23:59.8), while Alex Comerford was 74th (24:15.7) and Matthew Scrape placed 106th (24:23.3) to score for the Orange.
Assaf Harari (24:36.8), Nathan Lawler (24:53.7) and Ethan Wechsler (25:00.2) also raced for SU.
The men's team scored 251 points, behind the Cougars' 162 for second.
The Orange women finished 20th at the event. Second-ranked Northern Arizona won the meet. 'Cuse had 480 points, putting them ahead of ACC rivals Duke (508) and North Carolina (510), who took 21st and 22nd.
Savannah Roark (20:50.9) was the top finisher for 'Cuse, finishing 63rd overall. Sophia Jacobs-Townsley (20:56.8) was 87th in the 6k course. Rylie Lusk (106th/21:06.2), Olivia Joly (111th/21:09.9) and Madison Neuner (118th/21:17.8) rounded out the scoring.
Baneet Baines (21:45.0) and Emma Eastman (22:05.2) also competed.
The women's race at Wisconsin featured 22 ranked teams, of which the No. 25 Orange were one.
In addition to Wisconsin, Syracuse competed at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in the Bronx, New York.
The 'Cuse men took 12th at that event, led by Silas Derfel's top-20 finish in 18th overall. He crossed the line of the 8k race in a time of 24:30.4. Joey Eovaldi (24:55.9) was the team's second finisher in 57th (24:55.9), one spot ahead of Julian Franjieh (24:57.3). Noah Beveridge (25:44.4) took 137th, and Patrick Malone (25:51.6) finished in 172nd to round out the SU scoring.
Kamari Miller (25:51.6), Alex Herbst (26:03.8), Joey Hendershot (26:11.3), Eamon Burke (26:16.4) and Gabriel Planty (26:40.3) also competed in the meet for the Orange.
Madeline Heintz paced the Orange women to a 13th-place finish, crossing the finish line of the 6K race in 26th place in 21:33.5. Siobhan O'Keefe placed 47th (22:02.5), followed by Caroline Kirby in 58th place (22:09.7), Bethany Steiner in 119th (22:49.5) and Olivia Shattuck in 150th (23:11.0) to complete the scoring. Emily Toth-Ratazzi (23:42.9) rounded out the Orange finishers.
'Cuse has one final regular season meet remaining, the John Reif Memorial hosted by Cornell, on Friday, Oct. 20. The championship portion of their season begins on Friday, Oct. 27 at the ACC Championships in Tallahassee, Florida.
