2V8 Wins Two Races at ACC/Big 10/Ivy Duals

The 12th-ranked Orange rowing team won six races at the ACC/BIG 10/Ivy Duals, which featured five nationally ranked teams, on Saturday, March 23 in Cherry Hill, N.J. The field included #8 Penn, #13 Indiana, #14 Rutgers and #19 Radcliffe in the first session and #11 Ohio State in the second session.

In the first session, Syracuse won three races, including the second varsity eight, varsity four and fourth varsity eight. The Orange also had three second place finishes, including the varsity eight, second varsity four and third varsity eight. In the second racing session Syracuse beat Ohio State in three races, including the varsity eight, second varsity eight and second varsity four.

"The team showed a strong ability to learn from the first races and make the necessary adjustments and execute in the second session," said head coach Luke McGee. "Every boat had new faces in it, including the 2V8 which had just one returner from the 2023 boat that raced at the NCAAs. That crew is a young group and they showed a lot of composure and good maturity in both races today. We have good depth on the team this year."

The Orange varsity eight retained the Elizabeth H. O'Leary Cup with a victory against Radcliffe. The O'Leary Cup, named for Radcliffe coach Liz O'Leary, has been awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Syracuse, Dartmouth and Radcliffe since 2000. Syracuse has won the past five races against Radcliffe to keep the trophy in the Ten Eyck Boathouse. The Syracuse varsity eight, featuring coxswain Caileigh Grimes, stroke Emmie Frederico, Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, Alena Criss, Zoe Acosta, Kamile Kralikaite, India Aikens, Aphrodite Gioulekas and bow Izabela Krakic, posted a time of 6:42.0, behind Penn (6:40.6) and ahead of Indiana (7:07.7) and Radcliffe (7:07.1). In the second session, Syracuse (6:57.7) beat Ohio State (7:07.1).

Coxswain April Serrano guided the second varsity eight, which included stroke Olivia Bachert, Kaitlyn Dennis, Aicha Abdelaziz, Lena Radke, Lauren Coop, Grace Loveridge, Charlotte Ebel and bow Elizabeth Vogt, to a pair of first place finishes. The 2V8 (6:57.3) beat Penn was second (7:01.6), followed by Radcliffe (7:03.5) and Indiana (7:08.3). Against Ohio State, the Orange finished the race in 7:07.5, four seconds ahead of the Buckeyes (7:11.9).

The varsity four, featuring coxswain Isabella DeSantis, stroke Alice McNeill, Haley Uliasz, Nora Radke and bow Mae Sweeney, was victorious with a time of 7:47.3, ahead of Indiana (7:50.1), Radcliffe (7:51.1) and Penn (7:51.6). Against Ohio State, the Orange finished second with a time of 7:55.3, four seconds behind Ohio State (7:51.0).

In the second varsity four racing, coxswain Chloe Van de Meulebroecke, stroke Minaya Bishop, Kelsey Boswell, Maddy Gisby and bow Lea Dahn finished second (8:06.3) behind Radcliffe (8:02.5) and ahead of Penn (8:17.4) and Indiana (8:47.8), and then beat Ohio State in the second session, crossing the line in 8:05.0 to the Buckeyes' 8:08.3.

Syracuse's third varsity eight finished second in both races. Coxswain Dana Shearer guided the boat that included stroke Sarah Haney, Emma Cloud, Taylor Lewandowski, Maddi Segarnick, Annabelle McCulloch, Haley Minnick, Margaux Gryska and bow Cassandra Dasco to a second-place result (7:05.4), behind Penn (7:04.8) and ahead of Radcliffe (7:25.6). In the second session, the Orange came in second (7:57.6) to Ohio State (7:44.0) and ahead of the Syracuse 4V8 (8:26.1). The Orange 4V8 beat Rutgers 12 seconds in the first session, 7:36.1 to 7:48.3. Coxswain Isabelle Sareen, Lea Guttormson, Abigail Rockwood, Olivia Olsen, Abigail Berner, Mara McBride, Hannah Fagioli, Lily Thorpe and bow Olyma Desarmes comprised the 4V8.

Syracuse will race #5 Yale and Cornell on Saturday, April 6 on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
