6/12/2024 7:24:00 PM | Ice Hockey
The Syracuse ice hockey team will face six NCAA Tournament teams in 2024-25. Seven of Orange opponents closed last season listed in the national rankings. Head coach Britni Smith's squad, which features 11 student-athletes returning from the 2023-24 roster, will host the University of Windsor in an exhibition game on Sept.22 at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Â
The regular season opens at Minnesota Duluth, an NCAA Tournament team that closed last season ranked eighth in the nation, on Sept. 28th and 29th and then will open the season at home against Stonehill, an NCAA Tournament team that won the Northeast Conference championship. The 34-game schedule also features five Atlantic Hockey America (former College Hockey America) conference opponents Penn State, Lindenwood, Robert Morris, Mercyhurst and RIT, and non-league games against St. Lawrence, RPI, Quinnipiac, Boston University and Colgate.
Â
The AHA Tournament will feature all six teams in 2024-25. A quarterfinal round will include the No. 3 team hosting the No. 6 team and the No. 4 team hosting the No. 5 team on Feb. 22. The quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals with the lowest remaining seed traveling to the No. 1 seed and the second-lowest remaining seed visiting the No. 2 seed for best-of-three series, Feb. 28-March 2. The championship game is set for March 8 when the two semifinal winners meet at the home of the highest-seeded semifinal winner for one game to determine AHA's 2025 postseason champion and the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament.
