Former Syracuse ice hockey team captain and defenseman Kristen Siermachesky '21 will represent Team Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics as a member of the women's rowing team. She earned a spot on the Canadian National Team as an alternate for Team Canada's 8+ for the Olympic Games. On Monday, Jully 29, Team Canada will begin its quest to repeat as Olympic gold medalists in the opening heats races at 6 am EDT. The repechages are Thursday, August 1 at 4:10 am EDT. The women's eight final A is scheduled for Saturday, August 3 at 4:50 am EDT.
Â
After her standout career for the Orange on the ice, Siermachesky she elected to pursue her Master's degree in sport administration at the University of North Carolina and was not ready to put her athletic career to rest. Since UNC does not have an ice hockey team, she decided to pursue something new and took up rowing. Midway through her first year on the water as a Tar Heel, UNC head coach Erin Neppel saw something in Siermachesky's rowing ability and potential and reached out to Team Canada officials. Soon after Siermachesky received an invitation to train with the Team Canada Development Team in British Columbia. She took a leave of absence from the UNC grad program and moved in May 2022. Two years later, Siermachesky rowed in the gold-medal winning Canadian eight at the World Cup regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Â
The former Cuse Ice team captain played 125 games as a defenseman in Orange, tallying 17 points (5G/12A) and 132 blocks. Â
