Syracuse opens its 2024 season by hosting UMass on Thursday, August 15, at the SU Soccer Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
The Syracuse-UMass Series:
Thursday marks the first time Syracuse and UMass have squared off in Syracuse. The Orange own a 3-1-1 advantage in the all-time series.
The Minutewomen won the most recent clash, a 2-0 victory on August 31, 2023.
The two programs first competed on the pitch in 1999.
Syracuse Status:
The Orange posted exhibition victories at Albany (5-0) and against Colgate (1-0) in preparation for the season beginner with UMass. Junior goalkeepers Shea Vanderbosch and Blythe Braun both saw field time in the two exhibition games. Sophomore Sam Haley and freshman Lilly Heaslet also played at Albany. The four netminders combined with a stingy defense to hold the opposition scoreless.
Redshirt junior Erin Flurey is Syracuse's top returning scorer. She found the back of the net in each of the preseason matches. Junior Anna Rupert, who finished second on the squad in scoring last fall, is another key returning performer for the Orange.
Syracuse features five three-time letterwinners on the roster: seniors Grace Franklin, Kylen Grant, Kendyl Lauher, and Liesel Odden, and graduate student Kate Murphy.
UMass Status:
Coach Jason Dowiak guided UMass to a 9-5-4 record a year ago. He is in his seventh season in charge of the Minutewomen.
UMass features redshirt senior Bella Mendoza in goal. Mendoza started 16-of-18 matches in 2023 and produced a 1.00 goals-against-average and an .819 save percentage.
Senior midfielder Bella Recinos and senior forward Ashley Lamond where the squad's leading scorers last fall. Recinos finished with seven goals and five assists and Lamond had five goals and two assists.
