A quartet of current and future Syracuse rowers will compete at the 2024 World Championships from August 18 through August 25. Junior Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, sophomore Olivia Bachert, incoming sophomore Ella McKinley and incoming freshman Acorn Cassidy will represent their home countries at the World Senior, Under 23 and Under 19 Championships this week.
Â
A two-time Atlantic Coast Conference varsity 8 champion, Hutchinson will row in the Great Britain U23 8+ at the World Championship. Hutchinson, who won the 2023 ACC Newcomer of the Year award, hails from Castle Rock, Londonderry and rows out of the Bann RC and Leander Club. In her first year at Syracuse, Hutchinson rowed in the four-seat of the varsity 8 that won the 2023 ACC title and finished eighth at the NCAA Championship. As a sophomore, Hutchinson was in seven-seat for the varsity 8 that set an ACC championship record time en route to Syracuse's second consecutive V8 title and the ACC team championship. The 2024 varsity eight placed eighth at the NCAA Championship with Hutchinson in seven-seat.
Â
"Making the GB U23 team was a massive achievement. It is something I have always wanted to do and has been in the back of my mind when training," Hutchinson said. "I am really excited to race in Canada after a long summer. We have such a great group of girls and we have gelled really well as a team and boat. It's exciting to make friends with so many girls who we usually race against throughout the normal college rowing season."
Â
Bachert will row in the United States U23 4+ at the World Championship. She was in six seat of the 2024 Syracuse second varsity 8 ACC championship and the conference team title in her first year with the Orange. She rowed bow of the varsity eight that finished eighth at the 2024 NCAA Championship. A native of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., Bachert rowed for the Detroit Boat Club prior to enrolling at Syracuse.
Â
"Just getting invited to camp was a huge accomplishment for me," Bachert said. "The seat racing process was one of the hardest things I've done and being able to come out as part of the team was so exciting and made it all worth it. I can't wait to represent USA with such a committed and talented to group of girls. And, most of all, I'm ecstatic to be able to compete at one of the highest levels. Of course, a lot of nerves come with that, but I'm confident my boat has done the work to do well, which is exciting!"
Â
A native of Aurora, Ontario, McKinley will compete in the Canadian U23 women's 4+. She has international experience having won a bronze medal at the 2019 UANA Pan Am Championship for Team Canada's junior team. McKinley, who competed as a synchronized swimmer for Artistic Swimming Canada for five years, was an RBC Training Ground National finalist in 2022 and 2023. The organization identifies athletes with Olympic potential to fuel the Canadian Olympic pipeline. McKinley also rowed for Ontario NextGen Performance Centre.
Â
"This is my first U23 National rowing team, and I'm thrilled to be racing on a home course," McKinley said. "As a crew, we have been very focused on getting 1% better each day and striving to have the best race possible. We come to practice each day with strong intentions and focus, ready to tackle whatever workout we have planned. It's crazy to think that my teammates and I only met a few months ago and have formed such a strong bond, both in and out of the boat. Going into the regatta I feel both prepared and excited. A lot of hard work has led up to Worlds and it's an exciting experience to be able to race with such high-level crews."
Â
An experienced international rower, Cassidy will compete in the Great Britain U19 4- at the World Championship. Cassidy, who was born in Frimley, England and lives in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, set Irish Junior Rowing records en route to winning the Irish Junior Indoor Rowing Championships in the 2,000m and 500m events. As a member of the Great Britain Junior 4-, Cassidy, who rows for the Enniskillen Royal Boat Club, won gold and silver medals at the Munich Junior International Rowing Regatta in May.
