SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse men's soccer (3-2-3, 0-1-2 ACC) is set to host Cornell (4-0-2, 0-0 IVY) on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at SU Soccer Stadium. The contest, which will be live on ACC Network Extra, kicks off at 7 p.m. Admission and parking are free for all in attendance.
'Cuse Update
The Orange traveled down to Kentucky to take on Louisville on Friday, Sept. 20 at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium, playing to a 1-1 draw with the Cardinals. Daniel Burko recorded a 73rd-minute score to give the Orange an edge in the second half, but Louisville earned a share of the points with 45 seconds remaining in the game, netting a direct free kick.
Burko's goal was his second in as many games for the forward. The senior also earned a spot in the starting 11 for the first time this campaign.
Defender Sam Layton has played a key role on the SU back line this campaign, starting and going the distance in each of the Orange's eight games. The captain is a huge factor in Syracuse allowing teams to score just one goal per game against the Orange.
Gabe Threadgold, who is coming off a three-point performance against Canisius a week ago (Sept. 20) currently leads 'Cuse in points with six through eight contests.
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell, who received votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll on Sept. 17, is unbeaten through its first six games of the season, playing to a 4-0-2 record. Most recently, the Big Red edged UMBC, 1-0, on Saturday, Sept. 21 at home.
The Big Red leads the Ivy League in goals scored, largely in part to Alex Harris' five goals to start the campaign. The sophomore, who was unanimously voted Ivy League Rookie of the Year a season ago, leads the team and conference in points (12), goals (5), shots (30), and shots on goal (16). He has also added two assists to start the season.
Series History
Tuesday's contest will be the 77th match between the Orange and the Big Red in a series that dates back over a century. The first match was played in 1921.
Cornell holds a slight advantage in the all-time series against Syracuse, earning 37 wins compared to the Orange's 31. The teams have also played to eight draws.
Since head coach Ian McIntyre took over the program in 2010, the Orange have only fallen three times to the Big Red, going 6-3-2 across the last 11 matches, including two 1-0 wins in the NCAA Tournament ('12, '22).
Up Next
Syracuse continues its pair of home matches this week against Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 27. The contest begins at 7 p.m. and will be live on ACC Network Extra. Admission and parking are free for all in attendance.
