SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Caroline Trinkaus posted her second hat trick of the season in No. 6/5 Syracuse women's lacrosse's 9-8 setback to No. 14/12 Clemson in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Â
The game was played in front of a crowd of 2,899, which is the highest attendance in Division I women's lacrosse this season. That crowd also ranks third in program history for the highest single-game attendance.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team was able to pull away as the largest lead of the game for either squad was two. Back-to-back goals by Trinkaus and Sam DeVito gave Syracuse (3-3, 0-2) an early 2-1 lead, but Clemson (5-0, 2-0) outscored the Orange, 4-1, for the remainder of the half to take a 5-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Â
The squads traded goals to start the second half before Alexa Vogleman and Gracie Britton converted on free position attempts to even the score at 6-6 with 9:04 left in the game. The game was tied at 7-7 when the Tigers scored twice in a span of a minute to take a 9-7 lead with 5:59 remaining.
Â
The Orange cut the deficit to one on Trinkaus' third goal with 49 seconds on the clock, but Clemson won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock for the victory.
