An All-American at Plattsburgh State, Erin O’Brien continues her coaching career as a member of the Syracuse staff.
O’Brien spent three years coaching at her alma mater after her standout playing career concluded in 2005 prior to joining SU in 2008.
Along with recruiting in the eastern regions of the United States and Canada, O’Brien works as a day-to-day liaison with SU’s student-athletes. Her responsibilities include on-ice instruction during practice and games, breaking down all video footage, scouting opponents, strength and conditioning training, organizing team travel, coordinating team community service projects and acting as a link between the team and the Syracuse athletics department.
O’Brien has a wealth of experience as a player and a coach. In her prior role, O’Brien’s knowledge of the game was showcased in the Cardinals’ 2007 and 2008 national championships. She also coordinated the strength and conditioning program.
O’Brien helped lead Plattsburgh State to a 78-6-4 overall record in three seasons. Plattsburgh claimed the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s (ECAC) Western division and the post-season tournament in 2006 and 2007. O’Brien was part of a staff honored as the AHCA Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Several Plattsburgh student-athletes earned All-America and ECAC All-Conference honors in each of her years as an assistant. O’Brien was part of hockey history in 2007 when the team finished the season undefeated and went on to win the national championship for the first time in school history. Along with that distinction, the Cardinals were the first team in Plattsburgh history to host a national championship event.
O’Brien also served as an instructor in classes within the Sport and Wellness Department at Plattsburgh State.
All of the successes Plattsburgh enjoyed while O’Brien was on staff were a continuation of her ice hockey aptitude as a player.
O’Brien, who was a four-year captain for Plattsburgh from 2002-05, was named a first-team All-American as a senior when she led her team to the national semifinals. She was a second-team All-American in 2004 and a four-time All-ECAC West First Team member. O’Brien excelled in the classroom, too, earning ECAC All-Academic Team honors from 2003-05. In 2004, she was named to the “Who’s Who Among Students” in American Universities and College Award.
O’Brien shares her experiences by offering assistance at numerous camps across the United States and Canada as a counselor and coach.
A native of Pickering, Ontario, O’Brien earned her B.S. in childhood education from Plattsburgh State in 2005 and is working towards completing her master’s of education in curriculum and instruction. O’Brien resides in Little Italy.
