
Orangewomen Set Three-Point Record in Victory

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Julie McBride made a career-high seven three-point baskets and scored 30 points to lead Syracuse to a 62-54 win against Massachusetts in the Orangewomen's home opener. As a team, SU (2-0) made a school-record 15 treys and tied the school record set with 35 three-point attempts.
McBride became the first player in school history to record 30-or-more points in consecutive games (35 at Binghamton). She moved into seventh place on SU's career scoring list with 1,229 points. McBride made 8-of-15 field goals, including 7-of-12 from beyond the arc. Her seven three-pointers tied for second place on the SU single-game list. McBride is the fifth player to make at least seven three-pointers in a game. She also made all seven of her shots from the foul line, extending her run of made foul shots to 20. McBride also added four rebounds and five assists.
Freshman Lauren Kohn made 3-of-4 three-pointers for nine points, and junior Rochelle Coleman posted nine points, all on three-pointers, and three rebounds. Junior Krystalyn Ellerbe scored six points and posted three assists and five steals.
The Orangewomen shot 35 three-pointers for the second consecutive game. Entering the season, no SU team had ever shot more than 30 threes in one contest. The 15 makes versus the Minutewomen broke the previous mark of 13 set versus Georgetown on January 19, 2002.
"This is a good win for us. I'm really proud of this team," Syracuse head coach Keith Cieplicki said. "Shooting is contagious. When one person starts making them, the hoop keeps getting bigger and bigger for everyone."
Tamara Tatham led the Minutewomen with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Joyce Massey finished with 12 points, and Judit Zsedenyi scored 11 points and dished out five assists. Brooke Campbell led all players with 12 rebounds.
McBride scored Syracuse's first 11 points of the game, giving the Orange an 11-10 edge less than nine minutes into the game. UMass responded with a 12-2 run, including seven points from Tatham, to take a 22-13 lead with 7:35 left in the half. A pair of threes by Kohn helped SU cut the deficit to two, 24-22, with six minutes to play, but the Minutewomen scored eight straight points to take a 32-22 advantage with 2:25 left in the half. Massachusetts held a 35-26 lead at the break.
UMass scored just five points in the first 12 minutes of the second half. SU took advantage by building a 46-40 lead on the strength of six three-pointers with 9:33 left in the game. The Orange scored an additional four threes in the last five minutes to build a 10-point advantage, 60-50, with 2:41 on the clock. McBride finished with 19 points in the second half, including five three-pointers, to lead the Orange to the victory.
