Orangewomen Lose to Montana, 65-55

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Syracuse women's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season, losing to the University of Montana, 65-55, on Friday, November 28 in the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Classic hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Orangewomen are now 2-1, while the Lady Grizz are 2-0.
Junior forward Sarah Wegrzynowicz paced the SU offense with a career-high nine points. Wegrzynowicz also set career highs with four rebonds and two assists. It is the first time in her career that she has led Syracuse in scoring. Senior Rochelle Coleman and junior Krystalyn Ellerbe each had seven points.
Sophomore Marchele Campbell and freshman Tracy Harbut each scored their first career points with five and three, respectively. Harbut also snagged a career-best seven rebounds, tying with sophomore Tierra Jackson for team honors. All 10 Orangewomen made at least one field goal.
Hollie Tyler led four Montana players in double figures with 16. Julie Deming hit for 14, while Brooklynn Lorenzen and Jody McLeod each had 10. McLeod led the Lady Grizz with eight rebounds, while Lorenzen handed out eight assists.
The Orangewomen took at least 30 three pointers for the third straight game, connecting on 9-of-31 attempts from deep. SU shot 33.3 percent for the game (19-57). Montana held a 43-35 rebounding edge.
Montana scored first, but SU came back to take a 3-2 lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Jill Norton. The Lady Grizz went on a 28-8 run to open up a 30-11 lead with 6:27 left in the half. Montana led 39-20 at intermission.
Montana led by as many as 23 in the second half, but the Orangewomen outscored the Lady Grizz, 31-18, in the final 16 minutes to cut the final margin to 65-55.
The Orangewomen will move into the consolation bracket of the Rainbow Wahine Classic. SU will take on host Hawaii (0-3) at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, November 29.
