Orange Comeback Falls Short at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Syracuse women's basketball team rallied from a 21-point deficit to within three points in the final minute before losing its regular season finale, 73-67, at Georgetown on Tuesday night at McDonough Arena. The Orange ends the regular season at 12-15, 4-12 in the BIG EAST. Georgetown finishes the season at 12-15, 7-9 in the conference. The Orange and Hoyas will meet for a third time this season on Saturday, March 5 in the BIG EAST Tournament at 8 p.m.
Senior Rochelle Coleman led the Orange with 18 points, including 16 in the second half, and pulled down seven rebounds. Coleman went 4-for-8 from three-point range and moved into third place on SU's all-time list with 149 three-pointers, she passed Teakyta Barnes with 148. Senior Chineze Nwagbo scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Freshman Mary Joe Riley and sophomore Tracy Harbut added 10 points a piece. Riley also recorded career highs in rebounds and assists with six and four, respectively.
Varda Pamoulianis led the Hoyas with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Bethany LeSueur tallied 14 points and 11 boards. Kieraah Marlow chipped in 13 points and 10 boards, while Mary Lisicky had 12 points.
Georgetown opened the game on a 13-0 run. SU's first basket came at the 13:09 mark on a put back by Jessica Richter. Georgetown took a 17-2 lead as the Orange went one for its first 11 from the field. Syracuse cut the lead to nine at 25-16 with 3:57 left in the opening frame. The Hoyas closed the first half on a 12-3 run, including two buckets in the final 18 seconds, to take the largest lead of the half, 37-19, into the break. Pamoulianis had 11 points and seven boards in the first 20 minutes. SU was outrebounded 25-12 in the first stanza, which led to a 14-2 advantage in second chance points.
Georgetown netted the first basket of the second half and stretched its advantage to 41-21 with 18:49 on the second-half clock. SU used a 7-0 run to cut to the lead to 41-28, before the Hoyas went on a 7-0 run of its own to bring the margin back to 20. Georgetown took its largest lead of the game at 55-34 with 10:20 left in the game. The Orange went on a 32-14 run over the next 10 minutes to pull within three at 69-66, thanks to a Coleman jumper with 30.4 seconds left on the clock. Coleman had 15 points during SU's run. Lisicky went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 27 seconds to seal the win for the Hoyas.
After shooting 32% in the first half, the Orange shot 54.5% (18-for-33) in the second half and finished the game shooting 44.8% from the field. Syracuse was outrebounded 47-34. SU's 67 points is the most in a loss since Feb. 14, 2004, when the Orange lost 79-71 at Seton Hall. It is only the third loss this season when SU reaches 60 points. In two games versus Georgetown this season, the Orange has been outscored 80-34 in the first half and has outscored the Hoyas 89-63 in the second half.
The Orange are the No. 11 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament this weekend in Hartford, Conn., while the Hoyas are the No. 6 seed. The winner of the SU/Georgetown rematch on Saturday night will face the No. 3 seed UConn Huskies at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
