
Malcolm Scores Two in Season Opener

MINNEAPOLIS – Sophomore Janelle Malcolm scored two goals in a late third period rally in Syracuse's 4-3 loss at Minnesota on Friday night. The game was the season opener for the Orange and the second consecutive year it faced a nationally ranked opponent in its opening week of play.
Minnesota scored first after Emily West blocked a shot at the blue line and went one-on-one with senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel 13:42 into the first period. West added her second goal of the game within five minutes of the second.
Junior Julie Rising put Syracuse on the board, 2-1, with an assist by freshman Isabel Menard and junior Stefanie Marty. The goal was a result of a power play and came at the 9:13 mark of the second period. Last year, Rising notched six goals and tallied 13 assists for the Orange.
Syracuse tied the game, 2-2, 6:41 into the third period when Malcolm scored on a power play goal. The goal was set up by sophomore Megan Skelly and Maschmeyer, who had two assists in her Syracuse debut.
The Golden Gophers regained the lead less than a minute later with a goal by Brittany Francis, but junior Rising connected with Malcolm to tie the game, 3-3, midway through the third.
Minnesota scored on a power play goal with less than three minutes remaining in the game to reach the final 4-3 score.
Schoedel finished with 30 saves on 34 shots, while the Golden Gophers' Alyssa Grogan turned away 15 tries.
Syracuse went 2-for-4 on the power play, and Minnesota was 1-for-3.
The Orange will return to the ice against Minnesota on Sunday, October 4 at 3 p.m. to finish the series.
