
Orange Hosts Lady Hornets at Manley

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's basketball team will play its third consecutive home game on Thursday, November 19 against the Alabama State Lady Hornets inside Manley Field House. It is the first of two games the Orange will play in Manley (Dec. 30), with both being free to the public. The game can be heard on SU's flagship station WTLA 1200/1400 AM and on student station WJPZ 89.1 FM. Live audio for every Orange game is available on SUAthletics.com via Orange All Access. SU has only played two games in Manley Field House since 2006-07 and is 2-0 in those contests, defeating Lehigh, 61-54, in 2007 and Longwood, 72-40, in 2008. It will attempt to keep its streak alive while also trying to go 3-0 for the first time since 2004-05 when the Orange began the season 5-0.
Last Time Out
The Orange defeated Presbyterian, 97-56, on November 16. SU's 97 points was the most the Orange women have scored in the Carrier Dome. It shot 58.6 percent from the floor in the first half and 51.6 percent in the second half. It was the first time since a victory against Northeastern in 2007 that Syracuse shot 50 percent in both halves. The offense was powered by six players who scored in double figures, including senior forward Vionca Murray (14), senior forward Nicole Michael (14), freshman center Kayla Alexander (14), senior forward Juanita Ward (13), sophomore guard Lynnae Lampkins (12) and junior guard Erica Morrow (11).
Orange Establishes Post Play
Alexander and Murray have helped Syracuse develop its post play after they shot a combined 9-of-11 from the floor for a total of 28 point against the Blue Hose. After only two games, Alexander has already shown a presence on the court, as she is averaging a team-best 8.0 rebounds, 11.5 points and 1.0 blocks. She has made 50.0 percent of her field-goal attempts, while averaging 18.5 minutes per game. She has led the team defensively in rebounds in both contests, including eight in SU's win against Presbyterian.
Hillsman Gives First Vera House Donation
Head coach Quentin Hillsman and his wife, Shandrist Hillsman, have partnered with the Vera House to help support families affected by domstic and sexual violence. The Hillsmans will donate $100 every time the Orange score 70 or more points. Syracuse scored 97 points in its win against Presbyterian on November 16, giving the Vera House its first $100 donation from the Hillsmans.
Scouting the Lady Hornets
Alabama State opened its season with a 63-50 win against the University of Mobile, but lost to Colgate 66-57 on November 18. Nikel White led the team in points in both contests, scoring 12 against UM and 15 against the Red Raiders. She grabbed a combined 15 rebounds in both contests. Freshman Erica Henderson combines for 17 points and four rebounds on the season. Head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson I in her 12th season at ASU and returns three seniors, one junior and a host of sophomores.
