PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team swept Robert Morris, 4-2, on Saturday, November 21. Four different Orange women accounted for goals, including juniors Julie Rising and Stefanie Marty, who each scored one goal and two assists for SU. Freshman Isabel Menard continued on her success from game one, as she tallied SU's first goal of the night, while sophomore Megan Skelly added the final Syracuse goal. The Orange improves to a 6-5-1 record, while the Colonials are 4-9-1 on the season.
The Orange dominated the scoring in the first period. After senior Brittaney Maschmeyer was penalized for hooking in the fourth minute, Syracuse found itself without a defender. But that didn't stop SU, as Menard caused a turnover at center ice and fired a cross body shot past goaltender Kirsten Diciocco to open up the scoring at the 5:15 mark. It was Syracuse's first shorthanded goal since it played Wayne State on January 24, 2009.
Less than six minutes later, Syracuse increased its lead when Rising dished out the assist to Marty, who hit the puck over the glove of Diciocco to give the Orange the 2-0 lead.
Syracuse continued to build on its momentum when Rising received a pass from Skelly, who found the back of the net just 17 seconds into the second period. The Orange hit its fourth straight at 18:01 on a power play when Rising and Marty teamed up for the assist to a wide-open Skelly to gain the 4-0 advantage.
The Colonials got on the board at the 6:35 mark of the third period when Kathryn Stack and Kelsey Thomas found Kathleen McDonald for its first goal of the night. RMU cut the Syracuse lead to two when Thomas scored with less than 12 minutes remaining. The Syracuse defense held off the Colonials scoring efforts, despite outshooting SU 14-3 during the remainder of the game, to settle the 4-2 victory.
Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel recorded 28 saves, while Diciocco had 25.
The Orange will return to Tennity Ice Pavilion to begin its seven-game homestand on Saturday, November 28 at 2 p.m. against Union.
