COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior Katie Rowan recorded seven points in her final game as Syracuse's season came to an end with a 12-10 loss to No. 2 Maryland in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Orange finishes the 2009 campaign with a 14-5 record, while the Terrapins improve to 21-0.
Rowan led the Orange with five goals and dished out two assists. She improved her career point total in NCAA Tournament play to 45, the highest total for any SU player in school history. Rowan finishes her career with 232 goals and 164 assists for 396 points. Syracuse's all-time leader in points, goals and assists, Rowan currently ranks third on the NCAA Division I career scoring list and on the all-time assists list.
Rowan sparked the Orange in the first eight minutes, scoring three times and assisting on junior Christina Dove's goal, as Syracuse jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Sarah Mollison put Maryland on the scoreboard with her goal at the 20:40 mark, starting a 4-0 UM scoring run that tied the score with 11:02 remaining. Rowan gave the Orange the lead back with her third goal of the day, before Maryland scored two straight tallies to take its first lead of the game with 5:12 on the clock. Junior Halley Quillinan found the back of the net on an assist from sophomore Tee Ladouceur to tie the score, 6-6, with 3:22 remaining, but a failed clearing attempt gave the Terrapins possession in the final minute. Kristy Black's goal with six seconds remaining gave Maryland a 7-6 halftime lead.
After the Terrapins netted the first goal of the second half to increase its lead to two, Rowan responded with two straight goals, the second on an assist from Dove, to tie the score, 8-8, with 24:01 remaining. Caitlyn McFadden gave Maryland a one-goal advantage, before Ladouceur scored her first goal of the day to tie the score, 9-9, with 15:57 left in the game. The score remained tied until McFadden converted a free-position attempt with 12:56 remaining. The goal started Maryland on a 3-0 scoring run that gave the Terrapins a12-9 lead with 4:19 left on the clock. Senior Megan Mosenson scored on an assist from Rowan with 1:48 remaining, but that was close as the Orange could get as Maryland recorded the 12-10 victory.
“Our possessions were where we needed them to be, we just needed to get the ball a couple more times,” said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. “We needed to make a big play at the end and we didn't do that. Championship-caliber teams step up and make plays when they need it. We looked for it, but it didn't happen.”
Rowan led all scorers with seven points, and Ladouceur had three points on two goals and an assist. Dove had a goal and an assist, while Quillinan and Mosenson had one goal each. McFadden led Maryland with four goals.
The Terrapins outshot the Orange, 34-21, and picked up nine ground balls to five for SU. In addition, Maryland won 16-of-24 draw controls. Sophomore Liz Hogan made 10 saves for Syracuse, giving her 307 in her career. She is the third goalkeeper in school history to record 300 or more saves in her career. Brittany Dipper had eight saves for Maryland.
Syracuse's 14 wins this season are the second-highest single-season total in school history. The Orange won a share of the BIG EAST regular-season title and made its third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, where it advanced to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive season.
