SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Jacquie Greco notched Syracuse's lone tally in the third period as the Orange lost to Guelph, 3-1, in an exhibition game at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Kylie Klassen earned the assist, feeding Greco who placed a hard hit shot from the blue line past Guelph goalkeeper Danielle Skoufranis. The goal was a result of a powerplay opportunity.
“It was disappointing to lose, particularly at home,” said head coach Paul Flanagan. “All-in-all, we're still trying to get some combinations up front and figure out partners on the blue line. We had both goalies in, so we're trying to give everyone a chance.”
After a scoreless first period, the Gryphons came out and scored twice within the opening five minutes of the second. Junior Erin Small netted the team's first at 2:59, and sophomore Tamara Bell followed suit soon after. Freshman Kat VanVlack added one midway through the third. Skoufranis finished with 29 saves.
“I give them a lot of credit,” Flanagan said. “I thought the goaltender played very well. They did a really good job as a team. They just bottled us up and we played into it a bit. We played a little one-on-one hockey and we just weren't moving the puck.”
Senior Lucy Schoedel and sophomore Stephanie Jones split time in the net for Syracuse, combining for 14 saves. Schoedel spent the majority of last season in goal, finishing with a goals against average of 2.89 and a saves percentage of .904.
The Orange dominated 33-25 in faceoffs and outshot the Gryphons, 30-17.
“It's tough right now and it stings a little bit, but we're going to learn a lot more from it,” Flanagan said. “We're getting ready to play Minnesota, one of the top programs in the country, so a little slap in the face is good for us.”
Syracuse opens its regular-season schedule with a visit to Minnesota on Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m.
