SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior captain Stefanie Marty helped the Syracuse University women's ice hockey team open its season with a 4-4 overtime draw against Northeastern in the first matchup between the two teams. Despite outshooting the Huskies 38-19, SU could not produce the game-winning goal. The season opener marked the first time in program history that Syracuse has started the season unbeaten.
The Orange jumped out to an early 2-0 lead 13:49 into the first period, but the Huskies fought back to make it an evenly-matched game. Marty tallied a game-high tying two goals despite the defensive efforts of one of Northeastern's top defenders, her twin sister Julia Marty. It was the first time the sisters had ever gone head-to-head in their careers.
Northeastern's Katie Macsorley knotted the game at three goals each 2:45 into the third period and stuck again just over seven minutes later with the go-ahead goal. The Orange continued to fire shots at NU goaltender Florence Schelling until sophomore Isabel Menard found the back of the net with 5:10 remaining in regulation to force overtime. Each team had two shots during the extra minutes, but neither team could convert on its chances.
SU got a strong showing from its veterans, including senior Julie Rising, who contributed on each of the Orange's four goals, finishing the night with a game high four assists. Junior Megan Skelly also recorded one goal and two assist, while Marty dished out one helper.
The Orange lineup featured several fresh faces from last season, including seven freshman and senior transfer Ashley Cockell. Freshman defender Christina LaCombe registered her first career point with an assist on SU's first goal from Skelly. Cockell had a solid game on both ends of the ice in her first game in an Orange uniform. She fired eight shots and played a key role in fighting off the Huskies' attack down the stretch. Freshman Jenesica Drinkwater earned her first career start in the goal making 15 saves, including two tough saves in the overtime period.
Up next, the Orange will host No. 10/RN New Hampshire on Friday, October 8 at Tennity Ice Pavilion at 7 p.m. and welcome No.9/No.8 Boston College the following day (Oct. 9) at 4 p.m. The New Hampshire matchup will be webcast live on Orange All-Access.
