SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman goaltender Kallie Billadeau registered a Syracuse record 57 saves in a 4-1 setback against No. 1 Cornell on Tuesday. The Orange moves to 6-7-2 overall, while the Big Red improves to 11-1 this season.
For the 11th game this season, SU put the first score on the board. Eight minutes into the non-conference matchup, junior Kelly Dimmen fired a shot from just inside the blue line past Cornell goaltender Amanda Mazzotta. The goal marked Dimmen's first score of the season. Seniors Stefanie Marty and Julie Rising started the play and were credited with assists on the goal. Five minutes later, the Big Red responded and evened the score and SU headed to the locker room tied 1-1 with top-ranked Cornell.
In the second period, Cornell added two more goals to its scoring column to take a permanent lead and tallied one more in the final period to produce the final score of 4-1. CU's Lauriane Rougeau assisted on the Big Red's last two scores.
Marty helped SU win the battle in the faceoff circle, winning 17-of-26 draws. The Orange held a 34-30 advantage in faceoffs. Syracuse faced the most shots it has seen all season and Billadeau accepted the challenge, turning away 57 of the Big Red's 61 shot attempts.
The Orange will begin CHA action when it hosts Wayne State for a two-game series on December 3 (7 p.m.) and 4 (2 p.m.) at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
