Last Time Out
Syracuse fell short in a back-and-forth battle with #6/7 West Virginia, 70-61, on Jan. 15 at the WVU Coliseum. Eight lead changes characterized the hard-fought contest with neither team leading by more than seven until the final minute of play.
Sophomore forward Elashier Hall led the Orange with 20 points, her seventh-consecutive double digit
performance of the season, while adding seven rebounds. Senior guard Erica Morrow and junior forward Iasia Hemingway chipped in 12 points each. Morrow directed the offense with four assists while Hemingway had three rebounds.
Sophomore center Kayla Alexander also added a team-high tying seven rebounds, helping the Orange to a 32-27 edge on the boards.
Scouting Marquette
The Golden Eagles (15-3, 3-2 BIG EAST) are coming off three consecutive wins, including a pair of victories versus two top-15 teams in then #15/14 Georgetown (75-73 in double overtime) on Jan. 8 and then #6/7 West Virginia (69-54) on Jan. 11. Marquette defeated USF, 61-55, at the Sun Dome its last time out.
Marquette has had at least three players score in double-figures in each of the three wins against the Hoyas, Mountaineers and Bulls. The Golden Eagles currently boast three players (Angle Robinson-14.0, Paige Fiedorowicz-10.5, Tatiyiana McMorris-10.4) who are averaging 10-or-more points per game and three (Sarina Simmons-8.9, Jasmine Collins-8.3 and Katherine Plouffe-8.1) others who average more than eight points per game.
Simmons was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll for her performance against WVU and USF. Simmons averaged 12.0 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the floor in wins over the Mountaineers and USF.
Against WVU, Simmons ignited an 11-0 run in which she scored six points to give Marquette a 50-41 lead over the Mountaineers with 11 minutes to play in the game. Simmons fi nished the game with 14 points. She followed that performance with her fourth double-double of the season, 10 points and 10
rebounds, in a 61-55 come-from-behind win at USF.
Series Notes
This is the 10th meeting between Syracuse and Marquette, with SU currently leading the series, 5-4.
SU is 1-3 all-time in Milwaukee and 3-2 all-time against Golden Eagles in BIG EAST Conference play.
The Orange has won the last three meetings, including a 66-55 win in Milwaukee in 2009 and a 69-60 victory in the Carrier Dome last season.
