The Syracuse ice hockey team begins a three-game week on Wednesday when the Orange host Colgate at the Tennity Ice Pavilion at 7:00 p.m. SU (2-4-0) will be looking to rebound after dropping two games to Clarkson last weekend in a home-and-home set. Wednesday also kicks off a five-game home stand for the Orange, which will also host Union and Connecticut during the next two weeks.
Storylines Vs. Colgate
SU faces Colgate for the sixth time on Wednesday, with the Raiders holding a 3-1-1 edge in the all-time series. Syracuse will travel to Hamilton on January 2 to complete the season series. The teams met twice last year, with Syracuse winning the first game (4-3) before the teams battled to a 4-4 tie later in the season.
Brittany Phillips leads the Raiders through four games with 10 points (four goals, six assists) this season. She is tied for first in the nation with 2.50 points per game, while her two power play tallies are tied for fifth in the country with SU winger Holly-Carrie Mattimoe. Her six assists are also tied for second in the country (1.50 assists/game). Colgate has shown diversity in its scoring attack early on in the season as 14 different skaters have registered at least one point. Kimberly Sass has played every minute in goal for the Raiders in 2011-12, posting a 3.02 goals against average and a .900 save percentage.
The Orange will have their chances on the power play against Colgate, which is the second most penalized team in the nation (16.8 penalty minutes/game). The SU power play unit is 3-of-27 on the season (11.1%). SU is 12-13-3 all-time against ECAC foes.
Up Next: Union
Following Wednesday's game against Colgate, Syracuse will host Union for a weekend set at Tennity beginning Friday at 7:00 p.m. The teams will faceoff in the back end of the season series on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Syracuse leads the all-time series with the Dutchwomen 4-0-0, and has outscored Union 15-5 in the four games. The teams met twice last season, with SU skating away with 3-1 and 5-0 victories.
Darkangelo Leads The Freshmen Corps
Freshman center Shiann Darkangelo is one of seven freshmen on the SU roster this season. Through six games, Darkangelo leads the team with four points on four assists. She is tied for 23rd in the nation among rookies with 0.67 points per game.
The Syracuse freshmen have accounted for three goals and nine assists this season, which is 44.2% of the team's scoring. In the faceoff circle, Darkangelo leads the Orange in faceoff percentage (minimum 15 faceoffs) at 53% (70-of-132).
Carrie-Mattimoe And Goodnough Named To CHA Honor Roll
Sophomore winger Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and freshman defenseman Kaillie Goodnough were named to the CHA Honor Roll for their performances last weekend.
Carrie-Mattimoe scored two goals during the weekend series with Clarkson. Her first goal came 52 seconds into the second period on Saturday at Cheel Arena, tying the score at one. Carrie-Mattimoe then added a power play goal with 9:41 left in regulation. She has three goals this season, which is tied for third in the CHA. Her two power play goals are also tied for fifth in the nation.
Goodnough scored her first collegiate goal against Clarkson on Friday. The Mannsville, N.Y. capitalized on a loose puck near the blue line, and fired a slap shot that got through traffic and past Golden Knight goalkeeper Erica Howe. Goodnough has one goal and an assist this season.
Seven Freshmen Join SU Squad
Syracuse ice hockey has seven new faces on its roster this season: Jordyn Burns, Shiann Darkangelo, Nicole Ferrara, Kaillie Goodnough, Casey Hirsch, Julie Knerr and Allie LaCombe join SU as freshmen this year.
The newcomers include five forwards (Dankangelo, Ferrara, Hirsch, Knerr and LaCombe) and two defensemen (Burns and Goodnough), and will look to replace the seven letterwinners lost from the 2010-11season. All seven played in both games last weekend. The freshmen have contributed 12 of SU's 27 points (44.2%) through six games.
