Chelsey Heinhuis goal with 10 seconds left in overtime gave Union a 4-3 win against the Syracuse ice hockey team (2-6-0) on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Allie LaCombe had two goals for the Orange, including the game-tying goal with five seconds left in regulation. SU and Union will square off again tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
Syracuse held a 34-27 shot advantage and went 0-for-4 on the power play. The Dutchwomen converted on one of their three chances on the man advantage to erase a 2-0 deficit midway through the second period.
The Orange jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 3:55 left in the first period on Casey Hirsch's second goal of the season. Hirsch, stationed in front of the net, batted down an airborne puck off a shot by Nicole Ferrara and past Union goaltender Alana Marcinko (31 saves).
SU made it 2-0 on LaCombe's first collegiate goal early in the second period when she was on the receiving end of a Hirsch pass and hammered a shot past Marcinko for the score.
Union started to climb back into the game its first goal of the game with 7:03 left in the frame on Christina Valente's third goal of the season when she beat SU goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater (23 saves) with the Dutchwomen on the power play.
Union wasted no time in knotting the game at two as Jeannie Sabourin made it 2-2 just 1:54 into the third period off a feed from Bryanne Panchuk. Panchuk then made it 3-2 Dutchwomen with 8:36 left in regulation as she stickhandled through a SU defenseman before roofing a shot over Drinkwater for the score.
The Orange pulled Drinkwater in favor of the extra skater with 1:01 left in the stanza, and LaCombe was able to force overtime when she spotted a loose puck in front of the cage and snuck it through Marcinko.
Union only needed one shot in the extra frame, however, as Heinhuis potted the game-winner in the waning seconds
