SU Comeback Not Enough Against Arizona

LAIE, Hawaii – NR/RVSyracuse had its six-game winning streak snapped in a 80-74 setback to Arizona at the Hukilau Invitational in Laie, Hawaii. The loss is the Orange's first of the season as it goes to 6-1, while Arizona improves to 6-1.
Senior #Iaisa Hemingway# led Syracuse with 22 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Junior #Kayla Alexander# also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore #Rachel Coffey# netted a career-high 15 points.
Syracuse jumped out to an 8-5 lead before Arizona scored seven unanswered points to take a 12-8 lead with 16:23 to play in the first half. The Wildcats built its advantage to 12 at 26-14, marking the largest deficit the Orange has faced this season. Syracuse responded with an 8-0 scoring run, capped by a three-pointer by Coffey, to cut Arizona's lead to 26-22 with less than seven minutes on the clock. The Wildcats again increased their lead to 12 at 34-22, but the Orange outscored Arizona, 9-2, in the final five minutes of the half to go into the locker room down 37-32 at halftime. Coffey had six points on two three-pointers in Syracuse's offensive push to end the half. It marked the first time SU has trailed after the first 20 minutes all season.
Syracuse came out strong after intermission, scoring on its first four possessions to take a 44-42 lead with 16:57 to play. The Orange led for the majority of the second half, but couldn't pull away as the teams were tied five times in the final 16 minutes of play, which was twice interrupted by lengthy power outages. With the score knotted at 63-63, junior #Elashier Hall# was called for a technical. Davellyn White hit the ensuing free throws to give the Wildcats the lead for good as they recorded eight consecutive points. A three-pointer by junior #Carmen Tyson-Thomas# cut the Wildcats lead to 71-67, but that was as close as the Syracuse could get.
The Orange is back in action on Saturday, December 3 when it takes on Brigham Young at 6 p.m. in the final game of the Hukilau Invitational.
