SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Redshirt-freshman Shakeya Leary (Brooklyn, N.Y.) of the Orange women's basketball team and senior John Galloway (Syracuse, N.Y.), are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of March 21, 2011.
Leary is averaging 5.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, which is fourth on the team. She has made 45.7 percent (59-129) of her attempts from the field and 72.6 percent (61-84) from the foul line. In the first round of the WNIT Tournament versus Monmouth, she scored 10 points and went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. She added six rebounds, two steals, one assists and one block in her 19 minutes.
Leary, a public health major, and the Orange will take on St. Bonaventure in the second round of the WNIT Tournament on Monday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
Galloway, the starting goalie on the men's lacrosse team, set a program record with his 48th career win against Georgetown and recently earned his 50th in a 5-4 double overtime win versus No. 9 Johns Hopkins. He has helped the Orange to a perfect 6-0 record this season, recording a goals-against-average of 7.62 and a .522 saves percentage. So far this season, he has been named to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America First Team and received BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and conference Honor Roll accolades.
Galloway, a public relations major, and the undefeated Orange will face Villanova on Saturday, March 26 at 7 p.m.
