SYRACUSE, N.Y- Syracuse long snapper, junior Sam Rodgers (State College, Pa.), and women's basketball center redshirt senior Shakeya Leary (Brooklyn, N.Y.) have been selected as the Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week for Nov. 18, 2013.
Rodgers has played in all 10 games this season as the football team's long snapper. He is just one of four juniors on the squad to have played in all 35 games since the beginning of the 2011 season. The junior was recently selected to the 2013 CoSIDA Capital Once Academic All-District, marking the second straight year he has received the recognition. Rodgers is a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree and has been a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of his semesters at SU. He is majoring in nutrition in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
Leary is off to a strong start with the women's hoops team, averaging 15.5 points and 15.0 rebounds per contest, which rank 11th and first in the Atlantic Coast Conference, respectively. She has recorded double-doubles in both outings, the second and third of her career. In just her second career start in the season opener at Eastern Washington, Leary went off for career highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Orange to a 69-65 victory against the Cougars. Leary made the BIG EAST All-Academic Team during her redshirt year and is a two-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. She is pursuing a degree in public health in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
